Matthew 18:15-20
If your brother listens to you, you have won back your brother
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector.
‘I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.
‘I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them.’
So often, we notice that the teaching of the Lord is quite demanding. One example is found in the Gospel we read today. Jesus Christ teaches us about our responsibility for others, even to the point of admonishing our brothers and sisters and making them aware of the wrong path they have chosen.
This work requires a brave attitude, even at the cost of being hated and persecuted by another person, who may be among my friends, family, or companions.
But the instruction of Jesus is greatly needed to save a person from consequences that may affect both daily life and eternal life. Our reaction and care have the power to save many souls and protect them from evil and eternal condemnation. Human determination can lead many away from paths that bring suffering and sorrow in the future.
This is the constant battle for truth in both individual and communal life, a truth that is so often offered on the “altar of conformism.” Admonition is not simple or pleasant, especially when people are demanding and easily offended. Yet it remains an effort made for the sake of the human soul.
Today’s Gospel calls us to be determined in our struggle for truth in the public sphere, because every decision and attitude has consequences for society. We are like a chain of people who form a community, whether in a large or small group.
God admonishes us to seek truth and to follow His commandments in our society; He calls for justice, both in the past and today. Jesus Christ says that only the truth will make you free.

Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: "Gdy brat twój zgrzeszy przeciw tobie, idź i upomnij go w cztery oczy. Jeśli cię usłucha, pozyskasz swego brata. Jeśli zaś nie usłucha, weź z sobą jeszcze jednego albo dwóch, żeby na słowie dwóch albo trzech świadków oparła się cała sprawa. Jeśli i tych nie usłucha, donieś Kościołowi. A jeśli nawet Kościoła nie usłucha, niech ci będzie jak poganin i celnik. Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: Wszystko, cokolwiek zwiążecie na ziemi, będzie związane w niebie, a co rozwiążecie na ziemi, będzie rozwiązane w niebie. Dalej, zaprawdę, powiadam wam: Jeśli dwóch z was na ziemi zgodnie o coś prosić będzie, to wszystko otrzymają od mojego Ojca, który jest w niebie. Bo gdzie są dwaj albo trzej zebrani w imię moje, tam jestem pośród nich".
Bardzo często zauważamy, że nauczanie Pana jest wymagające. Jeden z przykładów znajdujemy w Ewangelii, którą dziś czytamy. Jezus Chrystus uczy nas odpowiedzialności za innych, nawet do tego stopnia, że mamy upominać naszych braci i siostry oraz pomagać im dostrzec złą drogę, którą obrali.
To zadanie wymaga odważnej postawy, nawet za cenę bycia znienawidzonym i prześladowanym przez drugiego człowieka, który może należeć do grona moich przyjaciół, rodziny lub bliskich.
Jednak wskazanie Jezusa jest bardzo potrzebne, aby ocalić człowieka przed konsekwencjami, które mogą dotknąć zarówno życia codziennego, jak i życia wiecznego. Nasza reakcja i troska mają moc ocalić wiele dusz oraz uchronić je przed złem i wiecznym potępieniem. Ludzka determinacja może odwieść od wielu dróg, które w przyszłości przyniosą cierpienie i smutek.
Jest to nieustanna walka o prawdę w życiu indywidualnym i wspólnotowym — prawdę, która tak często składana jest na „ołtarzu konformizmu”. Upomnienie nie jest proste ani przyjemne, szczególnie wtedy, gdy ludzie są pretensjonalni i łatwo się obrażają.
Dzisiejsza Ewangelia wzywa nas do stanowczości w walce o prawdę w przestrzeni publicznej, ponieważ każda decyzja i każda postawa mają konsekwencje dla społeczeństwa. Jesteśmy jak łańcuch ludzi, którzy tworzą wspólnotę — czy to w większej, czy w mniejszej grupie.
Bóg upomina nas, abyśmy szukali prawdy i przestrzegali Jego przykazań w naszym społeczeństwie; wzywa do sprawiedliwości, zarówno dawniej, jak i dziś. Jezus Chrystus mówi, że tylko prawda was wyzwoli.
