Matthew 14:13-21
The feeding of the five thousand
When Jesus received the news of John the Baptist’s death he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But the people heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.
When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, ‘This is a lonely place, and the time has slipped by; so send the people away, and they can go to the villages to buy themselves some food.’ Jesus replied, ‘There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they answered ‘All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.’ ‘Bring them here to me’ he said. He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves handed them to his disciples who gave them to the crowds. They all ate as much as they wanted, and they collected the scraps remaining; twelve baskets full. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, to say nothing of women and children.
While reading the Gospel of Matthew, we may notice that Jesus did something what, from the human point of view, is impossible. He fed five thousand people with just a few loaves of bread and some fish. He could do it, because He is the Son of God. He is united with the Father, and the power of God dwells in him. Moreover, the author of the Gospel writes about the prayer of Christ who raised His eyes to heaven in the moment of unity and love between the Father and the Son.
Jesus was able to satisfy hunger of those 5 thousand people, because His nature was and is extraordinary. This story indicates one more thing, our need for God’s presence. Of course, every one of us is independent, we have free will and can decide about ourselves, like those people from the Gospel. They chose to listen to Jesus and they also needed His help. Christ became their Comforter, not only spiritually, but he rescued them from hunger.
This moment of Christ’s mission shows that Jesus is the only person who can give us real happiness and fulfilment. A man may able to achieve a lot in his life by hard work and self-sacrifice. We can build our existence on material goods, but everything is limited. These things give us joy for a short time, but afterwards, we are left missing for something different, and we feel pressure for something more.
Christ can fulfil our emptiness if we believe and trust in Him. He is able to give us real peace, which is free from never-ending pursuit for something. He can do it, because he is God and the Son of God. His abilities surpass our possibilities. Feeding those 5 thousand people leads us to the Mystery of Eucharist, Christ wants to feed and strengthen us. I think, we have the same experience. If we receive the Body of Christ with pure heart, the unspeakable peace and joy dwell in our hearts, and we desire for this moment to never end.
Many years ago, I used to visit a lady, who took Holy Communion once a month. She was unable to come to the church, so I used to go to her house with the Body of Christ. Every time, she was telling me: Father I am happy, you gave me the best medicament in the world, my God. That meeting with Christ was her biggest happiness.
The Prophet Isaiah says: “Oh, come to the water all you who are thirsty; though you have no money, come! Buy corn without money, and eat, and, at no cost, wine and milk”.
Let us come to Jesus Christ, the real God, who wants to make us happy and bestows our hearts and minds with real peace. Amen.

Gdy Jezus usłyszał o śmierci Jana Chrzciciela, oddalił się stamtąd łodzią na pustkowie, osobno. Lecz tłumy zwiedziały się o tym i z miast poszły za Nim pieszo. Gdy wysiadł, ujrzał wielki tłum. Zlitował się nad nimi i uzdrowił ich chorych. A gdy nastał wieczór, przystąpili do Niego uczniowie i rzekli: "Miejsce to jest pustkowiem i pora już późna. Każ więc rozejść się tłumom: niech idą do wsi i zakupią sobie żywności". Lecz Jezus im odpowiedział: "Nie potrzebują odchodzić; wy dajcie im jeść!" Odpowiedzieli Mu: "Nie mamy tu nic prócz pięciu chlebów i dwóch ryb". On rzekł: "Przynieście Mi je tutaj". Kazał tłumom usiąść na trawie, następnie wziąwszy pięć chlebów i dwie ryby, spojrzał w niebo, odmówił błogosławieństwo i połamawszy chleby, dał je uczniom, uczniowie zaś tłumom. Jedli wszyscy do syta, a z tego, co pozostało, zebrano dwanaście pełnych koszy ułomków. Tych zaś, którzy jedli, było około pięciu tysięcy mężczyzn, nie licząc kobiet i dzieci.
Czytając Ewangelię według św. Mateusza, możemy zauważyć, że Jezus uczynił coś, co z ludzkiego punktu widzenia jest niemożliwe. Nakarmił pięć tysięcy ludzi zaledwie kilkoma bochenkami chleba i kilkoma rybami. Mógł to uczynić, ponieważ jest Synem Bożym. Jest zjednoczony z Ojcem, a moc Boga mieszka w Nim. Ponadto autor Ewangelii pisze o modlitwie Chrystusa, który wzniósł oczy ku niebu w chwili jedności i miłości między Ojcem i Synem.
Jezus był w stanie zaspokoić głód tych pięciu tysięcy ludzi, ponieważ Jego natura była i jest niezwykła. Ta historia ukazuje jeszcze jedną rzecz: naszą potrzebę obecności Boga. Oczywiście każdy z nas jest wolny, mamy wolną wolę i możemy decydować o sobie, podobnie jak ludzie z Ewangelii. Oni wybrali, aby słuchać Jezusa, ale potrzebowali również Jego pomocy. Chrystus stał się ich Pocieszycielem nie tylko duchowo, ale także ocalił ich od głodu.
Ten moment misji Chrystusa pokazuje, że Jezus jest jedyną osobą, która może dać nam prawdziwe szczęście i spełnienie. Człowiek może wiele osiągnąć w swoim życiu dzięki ciężkiej pracy i poświęceniu. Możemy budować swoje życie na dobrach materialnych, ale wszystko to jest ograniczone. Te rzeczy dają nam radość tylko na krótki czas, lecz później pozostaje w nas tęsknota za czymś innym i odczuwamy pragnienie czegoś więcej.
Chrystus może wypełnić naszą pustkę, jeśli w Niego wierzymy i Mu ufamy. On potrafi dać nam prawdziwy pokój, wolny od nieustannego dążenia za czymś. Może to uczynić, ponieważ jest Bogiem i Synem Bożym. Jego możliwości przewyższają nasze możliwości. Nakarmienie tych pięciu tysięcy ludzi prowadzi nas do tajemnicy Eucharystii: Chrystus chce nas karmić i umacniać. Myślę, że mamy podobne doświadczenie. Jeśli przyjmujemy Ciało Chrystusa czystym sercem, niewypowiedziany pokój i radość zamieszkują w naszych sercach i pragniemy, aby ta chwila nigdy się nie kończyła.
Wiele lat temu odwiedzałem pewną panią, która przyjmowała Komunię Świętą raz w miesiącu. Nie mogła przychodzić do kościoła, dlatego chodziłem do jej domu z Ciałem Chrystusa. Za każdym razem mówiła mi: „Ojcze, jestem szczęśliwa, dał mi Ojciec najlepsze lekarstwo na świecie — mojego Boga”. To spotkanie z Chrystusem było jej największym szczęściem.
Prorok Izajasz mówi: „Wszyscy spragnieni, przyjdźcie do wody, przyjdźcie, choć nie macie pieniędzy! Kupujcie i spożywajcie, dalejże, kupujcie bez pieniędzy i bez płacenia za wino i mleko!”.
Przyjdźmy do Jezusa Chrystusa, prawdziwego Boga, który pragnie uczynić nas szczęśliwymi i obdarza nasze serca oraz umysły prawdziwym pokojem. Amen.
