Matthew 14:22-33
Jesus walks on the water
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’
God gives us the First Reading from the First Book of Kings. In it, we meet the prophet Elijah, who is terrified and exhausted because he fears for his health and his life. He has been full of zeal for God’s work, calling the people of Israel to repentance. His mission has exposed him to danger and to the anger of Queen Jezebel, who promoted pagan religion.
Within the desert Elijah experiences something ex-ordinary, facing with the elements of earth, the strong wind and earthquake, but the Lord was in a smooth wind. This experience of the Lod’s wind made him able to have carriage and end up the mission; it was given to him. The meeting with Lord bestowed upon him with peace and strange, because the Lord was with him.
And now, let move to the lake of Galilea, the situation form the Gospel. Peter noticed the walking Jesus over the lake, he wanted to the same. The Lord was there, Peter was seeing him, and he was fear of a breeze wind. The whole situation does not concentrate on the phoneme of lack the gravity, but for the lack of trust. Elijah did not see the Lord, Peter had at hand Jesus Christ, the first of him trusted the Lord fully.
The miracle of the waking on water and the moment of doubt put the question, why have you terrified a man of a little faith. The words of Jesus to Peter says, I am with you in sight of you, and you doubted. The fear has won over the trust and presence of the Lord.
The whole story does not mean, I need to walk on the water, breaking the physical rule, but to trust in more important things, in my daily life, in the rule of faith. Jesus says to me, come to me through the “winds” of life, and like Elijah, to make you strong and follow me.
Again, during this year, the Lord reminds us, your power is in mine, in the rule of faith, in the wisdom of the Church. Trust me and let me guide you with peace and safety. I am for you, because I love you, says God. Amen.

Gdy tłum został nasycony, zaraz Jezus przynaglił uczniów, żeby wsiedli do łodzi i wyprzedzili Go na drugi brzeg, zanim odprawi tłumy. Gdy to uczynił, wyszedł sam jeden na górę, aby się modlić. Wieczór zapadł, a On sam tam przebywał. Łódź zaś była już sporo stadiów oddalona od brzegu, miotana falami, bo wiatr był przeciwny. Lecz o czwartej straży nocnej przyszedł do nich, krocząc po jeziorze. Uczniowie, zobaczywszy Go kroczącego po jeziorze, zlękli się myśląc, że to zjawa, i ze strachu krzyknęli. Jezus zaraz przemówił do nich: Odwagi! Ja jestem, nie bójcie się! Na to odezwał się Piotr: Panie, jeśli to Ty jesteś, każ mi przyjść do siebie po wodzie! A On rzekł: Przyjdź! Piotr wyszedł z łodzi, i krocząc po wodzie, przyszedł do Jezusa. Lecz na widok silnego wiatru uląkł się i gdy zaczął tonąć, krzyknął: Panie, ratuj mnie! Jezus natychmiast wyciągnął rękę i chwycił go, mówiąc: Czemu zwątpiłeś, małej wiary? Gdy wsiedli do łodzi, wiatr się uciszył. Ci zaś, którzy byli w łodzi, upadli przed Nim, mówiąc: Prawdziwie jesteś Synem Bożym.
Bóg daje nam pierwsze czytanie z Pierwszej Księgi Królewskiej. Spotykamy w nim proroka Eliasza, który jest przerażony i wyczerpany, ponieważ boi się o swoje zdrowie i życie. Był pełen gorliwości o sprawy Boże, wzywając lud Izraela do nawrócenia. Jego misja naraziła go na niebezpieczeństwo i na gniew królowej Izabele, która popierała religię pogańską.
Na pustyni Eliasz doświadcza czegoś niezwykłego. Staje wobec sił natury: mocnego wiatru i trzęsienia ziemi. Jednak Pan nie objawia się w tych potężnych znakach, lecz w łagodnym powiewie. To spotkanie z Panem daje Eliaszowi odwagę, aby kontynuować powierzoną mu misję. Spotkanie z Panem przynosi mu pokój i siłę, ponieważ Pan jest z nim.
Przenieśmy się teraz nad Jezioro Galilejskie, do sceny z Ewangelii. Piotr widzi Jezusa kroczącego po wodzie i pragnie uczynić to samo. Pan jest przed nim, Piotr Go widzi, a jednak zaczyna się bać z powodu wiatru. Sednem tej historii nie jest zawieszenie praw natury, lecz brak zaufania Piotra. Eliasz nie widział Pana w sposób oczywisty, podczas gdy Piotr miał Jezusa przed swoimi oczami. A jednak to Eliasz bardziej zaufał Panu.
Cud chodzenia po wodzie oraz chwila zwątpienia Piotra stawiają pytanie: dlaczego się uląkłeś, człowieku małej wiary? Słowa Jezusa skierowane do Piotra znaczą: Jestem z tobą, Jestem przed twoimi oczami, a ty jednak zwątpiłeś. Lęk zwyciężył nad zaufaniem do obecności Pana.
Cała ta historia nie oznacza, że mam chodzić po wodzie albo łamać prawa natury. Uczy mnie raczej zaufania w sprawach ważniejszych: w codziennym życiu i w zasadach wiary. Jezus mówi do mnie: przyjdź do Mnie przez wichry życia, a Ja, tak jak Eliasza, umocnię cię, abyś mógł iść za Mną.
Ponownie w tym roku Pan przypomina nam: twoja moc jest we Mnie, w zasadach wiary i w mądrości Kościoła. Zaufaj Mi i pozwól, abym prowadził cię w pokoju i bezpieczeństwie. Jestem dla ciebie, ponieważ cię kocham — mówi Bóg. Amen.
