As Jesus was walking on, he saw a man named Matthew sitting by the customs house, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.
While he was at dinner in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When he heard this he replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and learn the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. And indeed I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.’

The Gospel of Matthew tells us about its author himself. The Apostle describes his encounter with the Lord, who was passing by and noticed a young man collecting taxes for the Romans.
That man was deeply unhappy. He had money, connections, and opportunities, but he had no true friends—no one who could understand him, meet him, and speak with him heart to heart.
His suffering could be seen in his loneliness, despite his wealth and outward comfort. Society rejected him because he collaborated with the Roman Empire, and that rejection is difficult to put into words.
The meeting described in the Gospel became the decisive turning point of his life. Someone said to him, “Follow me,” and that someone was Jesus Christ. The words of the Lord answered the deepest longing of his heart: “Someone has noticed me.” The Son of God looked at him with love, as if to say, “I do not condemn you. Come with me, because I want to make you happy.”
That joyful day is portrayed in the series The Chosen. The actor who plays Matthew shows a man longing for acceptance. He yearned to be noticed and to experience closeness, and in Christ he found both.
There is a Matthew in each of us. Jesus Christ looks upon us and says, “Come to me. Do not be afraid or ashamed. I love you.” Even if no one wants me, even if others reject us and say, “Shame on you,” the Lord says to us, “You are mine.” He takes away our feelings of unworthiness, because we are precious in his eyes.
Jesus Christ, I want to find shelter in your gaze, to feel safe and to know that I am loved by you. Amen.
Ewangelia św. Mateusza opowiada nam o samym jej autorze. Apostoł opisuje swoje spotkanie z Panem, który przechodził obok i zauważył młodego człowieka pobierającego podatki dla Rzymian.
Ten człowiek był głęboko nieszczęśliwy. Miał pieniądze, znajomości i możliwości, ale nie miał prawdziwych przyjaciół — nikogo, kto mógłby go zrozumieć, spotkać i porozmawiać z nim od serca.
Jego cierpienie było widoczne w samotności, mimo bogactwa i zewnętrznej wygody. Społeczeństwo odrzucało go, ponieważ współpracował z Cesarstwem Rzymskim, a to odrzucenie trudno wyrazić słowami.

W każdym z nas jest trochę Mateusza. Jezus Chrystus patrzy na nas i mówi: „Przyjdź do Mnie. Nie bój się i nie wstydź. Kocham cię”. Nawet jeśli nikt mnie nie chce, nawet jeśli inni mnie odrzucają i mówią: „Wstydź się”, Pan mówi: „Jesteś mój”. Zabiera moje poczucie niegodności, ponieważ jestem cenny w Jego oczach.
Jezu Chryste, pragnę znaleźć schronienie w Twoim spojrzeniu, czuć się bezpiecznie i wiedzieć, że jestem przez Ciebie kochany. Amen.
