Jesus said:
‘I tell you most solemnly, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate, but gets in some other way is a thief and a brigand. The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the flock; the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leads them out. When he has brought out his flock, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow because they know his voice. They never follow a stranger but run away from him: they do not recognise the voice of strangers.’
Jesus told them this parable but they failed to understand what he meant by telling it to them.
So Jesus spoke to them again:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
I am the gate of the sheepfold.
All others who have come
are thieves and brigands;
but the sheep took no notice of them.
I am the gate.
Anyone who enters through me will be safe:
he will go freely in and out
and be sure of finding pasture.
The thief comes
only to steal and kill and destroy.
I have come
so that they may have life and have it to the full.’
Today we are celebrating The Sunday of the Good Shepherd which reminds us that the only true shepherd of people is Jesus Christ. It seems strange, because there are so many great bishops and priests. Yes, it is true, but our Saviour is the only person who has got an eternal priesthood, and bishops and priests are His helpers. The Gospel according to John says that Christ cares for His sheepfold which is the Church.
Today we should think about the importance of prayer and priesthood. Jesus Christ calls us. God wants to cooperate with us. We are the part of His plan and that’s why we should proclaim the Gospel and take part in Sunday’s masses where the real word, blood and body of Jesus is present. This is a gift, as one pope wrote, which is a very difficult to understand miracle.
During every mass, every day and in every hour, we have a chance to meet with living Christ who is present among us.
Saint John Vianney was a French priest from Ars. As he said every priest is a continuator of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. A priest is the steward of God's goods. In other words, he is the mediator between God and people.
John Vianney also said: “Leave a parish twenty years without priests; they will worship beasts.” Indeed, where is a priest, there is Eucharist and other sacraments, and where are sacraments, there is God.
Where is vocation to the priesthood, there the Church and Diocese is alive. Thanks to God we have priests, it is a blessing from God. Thanks to priests, the Eucharist and God's words are here. Unfortunately, there are places in the world where the Church struggles with the lack of priests, so often in Europe, in countries, it has always been fruitful of new vocation to the ministry of Church.
Today is an occasion to give thanks for the blessing that Gibraltar obtained from God, and an invitation to pray for new and saint vocations that will serve the Church.
I would like to thank you all for your prayer, sacrifice and help for the priests here. It is very important to us. Please continue this prayer, as the whole Church needs it very much.
Jezus powiedział: "Zaprawdę, zaprawdę powiadam wam: Kto nie wchodzi do owczarni przez bramę, ale wdziera się inną drogą, ten jest złodziejem i rozbójnikiem. Kto jednak wchodzi przez bramę, jest pasterzem owiec. Temu otwiera odźwierny, a owce słuchają jego głosu; woła on swoje owce po imieniu i wyprowadza je. A kiedy wszystkie wyprowadzi, staje na ich czele, a owce postępują za nim, ponieważ głos jego znają. Natomiast za obcym nie pójdą, lecz będą uciekać od niego, bo nie znają głosu obcych". Tę przypowieść opowiedział im Jezus, lecz oni nie pojęli znaczenia tego, co im mówił. Powtórnie więc powiedział do nich Jezus: "Zaprawdę, zaprawdę powiadam wam: Ja jestem bramą owiec. Wszyscy, którzy przyszli przede Mną, są złodziejami i rozbójnikami, a nie posłuchały ich, owce. Ja jestem bramą. Jeżeli ktoś wejdzie przeze Mnie, będzie zbawiony – wejdzie i wyjdzie, i znajdzie paszę. Złodziej przychodzi tylko po to, aby kraść, zabijać i niszczyć. Ja przyszedłem po to, aby owce miały życie i miały je w obfitości".
Dziś obchodzimy Niedzielę Dobrego Pasterza, która przypomina nam, że jedynym prawdziwym pasterzem ludzi jest Jezus Chrystus. To może wydawać się dziwne, bo przecież jest tylu biskupów i kapłanów. Tak, to prawda, ale nasz Zbawiciel jest jedyną osobą posiadającą wieczne kapłaństwo, a biskupi i kapłani są Jego pomocnikami. Ewangelia według św. Jana mówi, że Chrystus troszczy się o swoją owczarnię, którą jest Kościół.
Dzisiaj powinniśmy zastanowić się nad znaczeniem modlitwy i kapłaństwa. Jezus Chrystus nas powołuje. Bóg chce z nami współpracować. Jesteśmy częścią Jego planu i dlatego powinniśmy głosić Ewangelię oraz uczestniczyć w niedzielnych Mszach, gdzie prawdziwe słowo, krew i ciało Jezusa są obecne. To jest dar, jak napisał jeden z papieży, będący bardzo trudnym do zrozumienia cudem.
Podczas każdej mszy, każdego dnia i o każdej godzinie mamy szansę spotkać żywego Chrystusa, który jest obecny pośród nas.
Święty Jan Vianney z Ars mawiał, każdy kapłan jest kontynuatorem Męki i Zmartwychwstania Jezusa. Kapłan jest szafarzem dóbr Bożych. Innymi słowy, jest mediatorem między Bogiem a ludźmi.
Jan Vianney powiedział także: „Pozostawcie parafię na dwadzieścia lat bez kapłana; będą tam czcić zwierzęta.” Rzeczywiście, tam, gdzie jest kapłan, tam jest Eucharystia i inne sakramenty, a gdzie są sakramenty, tam jest Bóg.
Tam, gdzie jest powołanie do kapłaństwa, tam Kościół i Diecezja są żywe. Dzięki Bogu mamy kapłanów, to błogosławieństwo od Boga. Dzięki kapłanom jest Eucharystia i Boże słowo. Niestety, są miejsca na świecie, gdzie Kościół zmaga się z brakiem kapłanów, tak często w Europie, w krajach, które zawsze były żyzne w nowe powołania do służby Kościołowi.
Dzisiaj jest okazja, aby podziękować za błogosławieństwo, które Gibraltar otrzymał od Boga, oraz zaproszenie do modlitwy o nowe i święte powołania, które będą służyć Kościołowi.
Chciałbym podziękować wszystkim za modlitwę, ofiarę i pomoc dla księży tutaj. To jest dla nas bardzo ważne. Proszę, kontynuujcie tę modlitwę, bo cały Kościół bardzo jej potrzebuje.
