Matthew 5:1-12a
How happy are the poor in spirit
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
‘How happy are the poor in spirit;
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Happy the gentle:
they shall have the earth for their heritage.
Happy those who mourn:
they shall be comforted.
Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right:
they shall be satisfied.
Happy the merciful:
they shall have mercy shown them.
Happy the pure in heart:
they shall see God.
Happy the peacemakers:
they shall be called sons of God.
Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.’
This year, November begins on a Sunday, and on its first day we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. The Mother Church gathers her children to venerate God in his saints and in beatified men and women. We cannot know them all, for some have never been canonised, yet they are among them , redeemed through the Lord’s grace and their desire to be close to God. This feast honours the heroes of faith, both known and unknown. It is a day to celebrate their great love: they were aflame with zeal for God.
We turn our gaze towards the New Jerusalem and those who are with Jesus Christ, the Lord of eternal life. Here we see the beauty of those who offered themselves to God and celebrate the triumph of Jesus Christ and his Resurrection.
The Solemnity of All Saints reminds us of our shared vocation to holiness. This is not an alternative or an optional path, but the natural way of Christian faith and life. As a disciple of Christ, I am invited to follow the voice of God, who continually inspires me to live in the grace of Jesus Christ. The heroes of God are those who follow the Lord every day, discerning the will of their Master in truth and humility. They knew that their lives were built not on human greatness, but on trust in God and the awareness that goodness and the desire for holiness come from him. In the presence of their Master, they would often say, “We are merely servants, weak human beings,” for they knew the almighty power of God. The closer we draw to God, the more clearly we see our own limitations and shortcomings, which only God can overcome.
In the Book of Revelation, the elder asked, “Who are those in white robes?” The author responded that these people had washed their robes in the Blood of the Lamb. This conversation shows that the power of holiness does not come from human strength. Holiness is not about becoming a hero in human terms or someone whom others praise, but about placing all our hope in God and cooperating with him.
May this reminder of our path to sainthood encourage us to work with the Lord, trusting him to the end. Amen.
(Mt 5,1-12a)
Jezus, widząc tłumy, wyszedł na górę. A gdy usiadł, przystąpili do Niego Jego uczniowie. Wtedy otworzył swoje usta i nauczał ich tymi słowami: "Błogosławieni ubodzy w duchu, albowiem do nich należy królestwo niebieskie. Błogosławieni, którzy się smucą, albowiem oni będą pocieszeni. Błogosławieni cisi, albowiem oni na własność posiądą ziemię. Błogosławieni, którzy łakną i pragną sprawiedliwości, albowiem oni będą nasyceni. Błogosławieni miłosierni, albowiem oni miłosierdzia dostąpią. Błogosławieni czystego serca, albowiem oni Boga oglądać będą. Błogosławieni, którzy wprowadzają pokój, albowiem oni będą nazwani synami Bożymi. Błogosławieni, którzy cierpią prześladowanie dla sprawiedliwości, albowiem do nich należy królestwo niebieskie. Błogosławieni jesteście, gdy ludzie wam urągają i prześladują was, i gdy mówią kłamliwie wszystko złe na was z mego powodu.
Uroczystość Wszystkich Świętych przypomina nam o naszym wspólnym powołaniu do świętości.
Niech to przypomnienie o naszej drodze do świętości zachęci nas do współpracy z Panem i do ufania Mu aż do końca. Amen.
